Sometime, between a bussiness meeting and a play, you might stop half way to drink a coffe. On the ground floor the Excelsior building, one can find a cafe which stands at the junction point of the building’s 2 functions: cultural (theatre) and administrative (offices).
Its interior is done in a play of textures and colors that enhance each other, but also by introducing a number of details that complement the overall image of the space. There is one element which clearly defines the interior space of the cafe, giving it a sense of depth, while providing an unitary image: the chess like floor made out of black and white ceramic tiles. A contrast is created between this floor and the light beige wooden furniture which brings a warm feeling into the space, complementing the effect created by the tiling. Once you sit down at a table which, enjoys the presence of its own light cone, you have the sensation of an intimate area that creates around you.
The whole area seems to focus around the central bar whose position is underlined by a series of changes that occur both at the floor level, whose layout is changing direction here, and the ceiling.
In this inside space a series of elements (the silver wheat grains, the waveing curvs that create the wall’s design) invites you to feel them, to touch them, while their image carries the memory of summer, of the large wheat fields cuddled by the golden sun rays and why not of the beautiful landscapes in Provence, where it is said that you can enjoy the best croissant.
